The more the lawn is used, the more the soil is compacted. This happens automatically over the years, but also when a new house is built. It is precisely when heavy vehicles drive over the future garden again and again that the newly-built homeowner is surprised that the desired result is not achieved when seeding. 

Anyone who loves and cares for their lawn should treat their greenery to a sand treatment twice a year, both when laying a new lawn and afterwards. The results after sanding the lawn are amazing:

• Compacted soil is loosened by sanding
• Heavy soils become more permeable
• No waterlogging, as the sand serves as drainage
• Fewer problems with moss
• Air gets into the ground better
• Unevenness is levelled and a smooth surface is created

Because there are small air gaps between the round sand grains, your soil gets much more air and water can be absorbed much better.

Now that you no longer see the sand on the surface, the first successes will appear very quickly, which you will also see on the plants. Very quickly you will notice a lush, strong green of the plants and the roots can "breathe" properly again. The lawn will not only become more even because the sand levels the hollows, but also denser and stronger.

The ideal time to sand the lawn is during its main growing months, i.e. April, May, June, July, August and September. During this time, the lawn is strong enough to cope with both the preparation (scarifying and aerating if necessary) and the "growing through" of the sand spots.

For soil improvement, the lawn sand can also be incorporated with the Rasenrakel in smaller quantities in spring and / or fall (March or October).

Ideally, you should use round-grained, washed and low-lime quartz sand (e.g. Rhine sand) with a grain size of 0.5 to 2 mm for sanding the lawn.

If you already have sand at home and are not sure if it is suitable for lawn sanding, imagine you are a child: try to build a nice little sand castle with this sand.

Is it holding? Then the sand probably has too much clay and would only "stick" to your soil.

Doesn't it hold? If your structure is falling apart, things are looking good for you and your lawn.

Make sure you only use the sand when it is dry. Anything else is too strenuous and will only cause unnecessary muscle ache.

The amount always depends on your personal circumstances and what measures you have already taken. As a rule of thumb, 5 liters of sand per m² of lawn.

To get the best results from sanding the lawn and really help the soil, you shouldn't just sprinkle the sand on the lawn. Of course, that doesn't help.

Ideally, you should proceed in the following steps:

• Mowing the lawn short
  Here you should - in order to be able to work more easily with the Rasenrakel - mow to a height of 3cm. Is your lawn otherwise shorter? Great. So much the better.
  
• Scarify (or even aerate)
  If you have a mulch mower in use and/or your turf is very matted, it is a good idea to scarify the lawn beforehand so that the sand gets where it needs to go.
  For extremely compacted soils, it is also possible to aerate with the RISISANI hand aer ator.
  
• Thoroughly remove lawn thatch
  If necessary, run again with a sickle mower with good suction.
  
• Pour sand coarsely on the lawn, spread evenly ideally with the RISISANI Landscape Rake.
  
• With the Rasenrakel process and smooth the sand on the surface
  

By now, your lawn will look so scary that you'll be in tears and doubting your decision. But after only two weeks you will see the result. From now on, the sand can also penetrate the soil and unfold its effect there.

In addition, it is of course the ideal tool for regular sanding of your lawn. Due to its special manufacturing, it glides effortlessly over the grasses and protects the plants.

It is also used a great deal in civil engineering. For example, many gardening and landscaping companies tell us that they use the Rasenrakel to level driveways, gravel and grit. 

It has also found its way into many cities and municipalities, which use it to maintain their sports fields and green spaces. And not only real turf fields, but also especially artificial turf fields, which are of course also sanded regularly.

After you're done with the lawn sand, the question quickly arises as to how long it will look "so terrible." In short, it depends. 

On the one hand, of course, it depends on how much sand you have used and, on the other hand, on the conditions. For example, on an already relatively even surface, you will very quickly no longer see the sand as it seeps into the ground and the sand compacts the lawn again.

However, if you have to deal with larger bumps, you may still see them for a few days. If the hollows are not too deep, the grasses will work their way through again after a few days.

However, if the holes are too deep (more than 2 cm), it is recommended to reseed these places with topsoil or special turf soil. As a rule, after 10-14 days the sand on the surface is no longer visible and the first results are not long in coming.

Of course, the more maneuverable Rasenrakel L-80 is ideal for a 250 square meter front yard. However, if you want to work on a larger area instead, you are better off with the Rasenrakel XL-120. On the soccer field or golf course, the Rasenrakel XXL-160 is naturally in its preferred terrain.

But the level of your lawn is also crucial:

While you can remove the "coarser" unevenness with the Rasenrakel L-80, you can fine-tune with the wider variants and get even the smallest unevenness level due to the extremely wide contact surface. In our opinion, both large Rasenrakel are more suitable for professionals.
